Still on the New Face Igbo. By Ibrahim Dan Halilu

(GAMJI)

I think Alex Ekweme of all the Igbo presidential hopefuls would have made a good president but for his unguarded statements in the aftermath of the annulment of June 12, 1993 elections by the Babangida administration.  Dr. Ekweme, like other southerners, erroneously interpreted the annulment as a northern agenda to hold on to power.  In his attempt to curry the recognition of his tribesmen, he relinquished his previous national status of a Vice President, pejoratively describing his role in the Shagari government as a figurehead.  A man with such an unreliable political stature could hardly win the support of the North to clinch the presidency, unless he tendered an apology or recant his earlier claim. Bicycle and Recycled  Government Revisited. By Kunle I. Sowunmi

(GAMJI)

I  grew up hearing the same names ruling Nigeria since Independence. It was like the civics we studied in primary school in the sixties. Each time Nigeria advertised for new leadership/managers to manage its states local and federal political positions  the same set of failed political managers and leaders applied and they are given the jobs. Anecdotes from the Birth of Jesus. By Abdulsalam Olatubosun Ajetunmobi

(GAMJI)

The importance of Jesus as prophet in Muslim tradition is much more than a matter of lip-service and apologetic retreat - Muslims generally know quite a lot about Jesus who clearly featured in the Qur'an as an important prophet of God, an ascetic man of voluntary poverty, humility and long-suffering who taught the return of good for evil and who evidently foretold the advent of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (saw) who later came after him. Why President Obasanjo and Most of the Governors Do Not Deserve A Second Term. By  Okechukwu D. Anyamele, Ph.D.

(GAMJI)

As the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Nigerian Armed Forces, the tenure of Mr. Obasanjo and that of many of the current governors, especially the ones from southeast and south-south, does not bode well for Nigerians and Peoples Democratic Party that gave them the platform to govern. When a nation of our size cannot host a beauty pageant that a single Public Relations Company is able to host, the symbolic image says a lot of how low we have sunk under the leadership of Mr. Obasanjo. The Rantings of Southern Kaduna Elders Consultative Forum. By Ibrahim Dan Halilu

(GAMJI)

The self-styled Southern Kaduna Elders Consultative Forum, SKECF was on the news recently describing the unfortunate riots the engulfed Kaduna town on Thursday, November 21 over the This Day offensive reference to Prophet Muhammad (SAW) as a pre-planned elimination of the people of southern Kaduna by Muslims.  The Forum’s spokesman, Major General Yohanna Kure was further reported as having accused the Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Ahmed Mohammed Makarfi of not only taking side with the Muslims but also of poor handling of the riots. Details

Trojan Horse: Obasanjo's Christmas Gift to Niger Delta!!! By Tom Mbeke-Ekanem

(GAMJI)

President Obasanjo stated in part that the Bill as amended by the National Assembly was "far-reaching, as it is a potential source of conflict between neighboring countries and Nigeria." Incidentally or coincidentally, Obasanjo's letter was released a day after the Kano Elders Forum (KEF) led by the Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero raised objection to the Bill. The KEF declared that the action by the National Assembly to override the presidential veto of the Bill was a threat to the nation's corporate existence. They contended that the Bill as passed was not in the interest of the North! Details

The Return of the Star of Bethlehem. By  Stephen Lampe

(GAMJI)

Every December 25, much of the world celebrates the incarnation on earth, about two millennia ago, of Jesus of Nazareth, who has become widely recognized as the Son of God. However, some people, especially Moslems, have difficulty with the concept of the Sonship of God. Moslems point out, quite correctly, that “God does not beget nor was He begotten”. The “Son of God” is a spiritual concept and must not be interpreted in an earthly sense; in a spiritual sense, sonship means a “part of”. Details

Sharia, Violence and Nigerian Politics. By  Tokunbo Awoshakin

(GAMJI)

As a matter of fact, a situation whereby Alex Ekwueme, Mohammed Buhari, Ibrahim Babangida and even Olusegun Obasanjo still want to come back as president of Nigeria in 2003, makes one wish Sani Abacha was also alive to join the group. Now if you get the sarcasm in that statement, definitely something has changed in the caliber of political leaders Nigerian need today. Details

The Nigerian Poor And The Glory. By Ugochukwu D. Ejinkeonye

[LAGOS]

(GAMJI)

Incidentally, in Nigeria from where I am writing now, where a retired soldier called Mr. Olusegun Obasanjo is President and Commander-in-Chief, the citizens practically live below poverty line.  It is also in this same country that a fellow called Mr. Arthur Nzeribe, that vile fellow and Obasanjo’s good friend and partner in unpatriotic and nocturnal anti-people activities, is announcing to the whole world that he obtained some 300 million naira (evidently from his good friend and partner, Obasanjo) to bribe Nigeria’s senators to drop their impeachment move against Obasanjo Details

Shari ‘a and the Practicalisation of Ideological Postulates: Between Sanusi Lamido Sanusi and the Rest of Us. By  Ibraheem A. Waziri

(GAMJI)

I will only add that the Shari ‘a states must learn to redefine their priorities, or at least expand them in such a manner that women who are seemed to be more vulnerable to Hudood punishments will gain more surety to a better life. Let the state enforce the application of Muslim family laws in matters relating to divorce, widowhood, Iddah and the token sum that should be given to a divorced by her former husband. Details

How Kwankwaso Upstages Opponents in Kano Politics, to Break a Jinx. By Ado Bello

(GAMJI)

It is quite clear to any observer of Kano politics that Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, Kano state’s PDP Governor was bound for a second term and it is likely he will break the jinx that no Kano ruler goes for two tenures. Emir Sanusi of blessed memory and former Governor Rimi could not break this Jinx, though is not a Divine injunction or is decreed by Allah try though they did, well that is all history. Details

The Nigerian Economy On Auto-Pilot or The Sky Is Falling?  By  Paul I. Adujie

(GAMJI)

This week, I read an article on the internet written by one Asonye Ihenacho which stated matter-of-factly that the Nigerian economy has been and is still on Auto-Pilot, not figuratively, but literarily; Anyone with a modicum of intellect should not make any such assertion; But he did so adamantly and repeatedly in every paragraph and every page of the article of several pages, it made nonsense of intellectual honesty. An Exhausting Ibrahim Babangida. By Banjo Odutola

(GAMJI)

PDP: Zoning to Irrelevance. By Abubakar Jika

(GAMJI WRITER)

Virtually everyone in Nigeria, including those serving Obasanjo knows that Baba as they fondly call him has failed as a president. The House of Representatives are today probing his Mr. Fix It, Tony Anenih who was his Works & Housing Minister. After squandering N360 billion on so-called roads, not a single one has been completed that can make any of us proud. Details

Is Max Gbanite Real? By Abu A. Momoh, LL.B., LLM

(GAMJI)

After reading the two irritating pieces by a certain Max Gbanite on his self-chosen idol, IBB, I am constrained to ask who the hell is this person? Or put in another way, is Max Gbanite real? If real, is he a Nigerian? Is he a man or a woman? If so, how much is he/she getting for the indecent job that he/she is performing so shamelessly and so enthusiastically too? How old is he or she? In Defence of Max Gbanite's IBB Marketing. By  Paschal Oriarewoh

(GAMJI)

So if the man thinks that IBB is the greatest human being on earth, so bit it, and it does not in fact add a bit or subtract another bit from the truth which most rational people know of.  I am therefore not in agreement with those who pick quarrels with the lengthy praise-singing essays of that man. It is common knowledge that most of those who have succeeded in Nigeria did so through priase-singing projects and the poor man is only trying his luck in the hero-worshipping business even his subject matter of worship happens to be no good. Response to: Ibrahim Babangida's "Ethnicity and the Nigerian State." By  G. Adewale

(GAMJI)

In the Thisday Saturday on the 14th December 2002 the article titled 'Fat makers of a Lean year' it describes General Babangida (Rtd) as follows: " No matter what his critics say or think, General Babangida (Rtd) is one Nigerian whose activities have continued to influence the dynamics of the Nigerian society. That is why Babangida, hate him or love him, remains a core personality in the general equation in the socio-political life and fortune of the country". With this analysis, I rest my case. Obasanjo's Economic (Mis) Governance. By Dalhatu Yola

(GAMJI)

Since the early 1980’s, fluctuation of oil prices is routinely apportioned blame for starting the slide in Nigeria’s economic fortune. In spite of decades of bumpy ministrations, including IMF/World Bank structural adjustments that only result in hiccups and false starts, the avalanche of ruination has neither reversed nor come to a halt. Like a terminal affliction, Nigeria’s economic performance has remained stubbornly negative with attendant ill effects on the well being of citizens. Details

A Loser Before the Race. By Yinka Ogundiran

(GAMJI)

There is this man in Nigeria scene of politics that wants to become the President but it's a pity he can't ever be. The man is called Gani Fawehinmi. Since the period of my understanding, growth and enlightenment, I have always known this man to be an arrant critic. His criticisms had led to various altercation and ferocious subversions to the successive shifts of polity of our federal republic. Details

State and Political Leadership in Federalism. By Victor E. Dike

(GAMJI)

Therefore, for Nigeria’s federal system to work properly, the states in the federation must wake up and assume their responsibilities and utilize their opportunities. Accordingly, “The success of our federal system…depends…upon the performance of the States.” To accomplish this, the state and local governments must have their own constitutions and local ordinance, respectively. More importantly, the states must work and assist local governments to meet the needs of the people. Details

Beyond Yar 'Adua-Jikamshi Conflict: The Public Disinterest in Social Justice- A Rejoinder. By Abdullahi Abubakar

His Excellency, President Olusegun Obasanjo at Abuja counseled Governor Bola Tinubu of Lagos State to take a tutorial from Governor Umar Yar'adua in jurisdiction of state funds. Governor Tinubu reportedly requested for some financial assistance from the President and the latter would only oblige if he would consult and imitate Governor Yar'adua. This was in Abuja and in the absence of Governor Yar'adua. Details

State Failure and the Collapse of Educational System in Northern Nigeria. By Ibrahim Ado-Kurawa

(GAMJI)

With the failure of the state to provide decent education in the South the people there mobilized their communities to establish schools at all levels and also compliment the efforts of their governments in the public schools. Therefore many communities in the south established good primary and secondary schools and now private universities owned by the Churches and private investors have started springing up. In the Muslim areas of the north the case has been different despite the apparent state failure to provide this essential service. Details

The Portrait of a Generation of Politicians. By Okezie Chukwumerije

(GAMJI)

Egotism and solipsism characterize our second-generation politicians. There is a saying that all politics is local. In Nigeria, this aphorism ought to read that all politics is for the promotion of personal interests. The promotion of personal interest is the goal of Nigerian politics. Our second-generation politicians are self-obsessed. Their politics is a me-me kind of politics. What is in it for me? is the ubiquitous question. Not what is in it for the country or my electorate, but what is in it for me? This generation of politicians views all political matters from the perspective of the self. Details

Boni's Tazarce and the Yola Crisis. By Babayola Muhammadu Toungo

(GAMJI)

Mr. Boni Haruna has succeeded where other past Chief Executives of Adamawa State (before now Gongola State) failed - by visiting riots and mayhem in Yola the state capital.  He has succeeded in tasking the patience of the populace.  The citizens of Yola are known for their passivity, which arises from religious piety, and faith so whoever is conversant with the culture and politics of the town will tell you the people has never protested.  Details

In God's Name! By Dozie Ikem Ezeife

(GAMJI)

Faith is good. One should have faith in, believe and worship the Supreme Being. What one should not do is alienate common sense and permit fast talking con-artist dressed up in pimp outfit to financially rape poor, helpless and hopeless Nigerians in the name of God. Of Revisionists, Apologists and Hangers on – A Rejoinder to Max Gbanite’s Still on General Ibrahim Babangida: My Response. By Omoba Oladele Osinuga

(GAMJI)

Max may have mentioned the names of IBB cabinets in relation to the SAP program but the fact remains that the principle of collective responsibility is anachronistic in a military regime and IBB’s was no different as evidenced when the OIC membership decision was taken solely by the ‘President’ – a decision which facilitated the departure of Ebitu Ukiwe (IBB’s deputy as Chief of General Staff) from IBB’s government. IBB’s regime was known for its longwinded process of consultation when in fact the decision had already being by President IBB executive fiat. Details

Twighlight of Leadership in Nigeria. By Kevin Etta

(GAMJI)

It is unbelievable and unconscionable that neither the federal attorney general nor the attorney general of Isioma Daniel’s home state have to date deemed it necessary to take legal action against the Zamfara officials that pronounced an open incitement to kill a non-Muslim with impunity. One would have thought that the Nigerian government at all levels would have jumped at this opportunity to tackle the constitutional affront of Sharia once-for-all. Details

Sowere Omoyele on Professor Wole Soyinka and Pyrates. By Dozie Ikem Ezeife, Esq.

(GAMJI)

It appears from his article that Mr. Omoyele was a victim of one of these cults. I empathize with him. But he surely must know that Pyrates were no longer active in schools at the time he was at the University of Lagos. His ranting against Soyinka and the National Association of Seadogs is obviously informed by his bad experience in the hands of an unnamed cult group at the University of Lagos. It had nothing to do with Soyinka or the Pyrates. His aggression was rather misplaced. Details

The Peril of Blind Hero Worshipping. By Odindu Odunze Ph.D.

(GAMJI)

Suddenly, Obasanjo's re-election has become an ethnic nationality sacred cow for which the Yorubas will conveniently set in abeyance any or all intra-Yoruba differences in order to endure. To many Igbos, and to Ohanaeze, the only personage to shuttle between them and his Excellence Obasanjo is his Excellency Odumegwu Ojukwu. Details

Igbo President Now, Right? By Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo

(GAMJI)

If the spirit of rotation were anything to go by, it will be fair to allow the Igbos to slug it out alone. A precedent was set in 1999 with two Yorubas and I am not oblivious of the presence of over 20 soon-to-be also-ran political parties. It is doubtful what any of the new parties can contribute to 2003 apart from the nuisance value they were originally registered to provide. Details

Recognition of Women's Human Rights in Nigeria. By Dr. Ayesha Imam

[MONTREAL, CANADA]

Until 1999, Muslim laws in contemporary Nigeria had been largely uncodified family and personal status laws (marriage, divorce, child custody and maintenance, inheritance).  They were not enacted as written statutes. In 1999, beginning with Zamfara state, some states started passing  series of new Sharia Acts.  In principle, this could have included many areas in economic and social development, such as provisions for the collection and distribution of zakat (the charity tithe, which is one of the five pillars of Islam), or the implementation of regulations prohibiting usury (such as charging interest on loans by moneylenders or banks).  In practice, however, in none of the 12 “new Sharia” states has there been much beyond elaborating and executing punishments for offences like theft, zina (adultery or fornication, depending on marital status), and drinking alcohol. What Authority and Justification for Zamfara's 'Fatwa'? By Iman

(GAMJI)

In issuing this proclamation, and declaring that it is ‘binding on all Muslims, wherever they are, to consider the killing of the writer their religious duty’, Zamfara State has attempted to proclaim the death of discourse on the issue, which cannot and should not be permitted. In the face of so momentous a declaration, we are compelled to critically examine the credibility of Zamfara State Details

Still On His Excellency, General Ibrahim Babangida: My Response. By Max Gbanite

(GAMJI)

One of the intellectual writers opined that Bill Gates could attest to his wealth, whereas General Babangida cannot. But this same writer has refused to take up the challenge offered by His Excellency President Olusegun Obasanjo seeking information from any person(s) on where Babangida stashed his money to come forward with such information. President Obasanjo also promised to prosecute with immediate effect and went to the great length of swearing that "if I fail to do so, say no be my papa borne me". Details

The Gospel with Tribal Marks - A Response to Omoba Oladele Osinuga. By Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo

(GAMJI)

Some of my best friends are Yoruba guys for whom I can even walk on water. A classic example is Sunday Dare who was on the line of fire from my northern kinsmen for becoming Head of the VOA Hausa service in Washington. I rose to his defence stoutly, with a conviction that we need a sense of community, a spirit that we are all Nigerians or our dream of one nation, one destiny will continue to wither. In that article and the one in question, I pontificated that our destiny is bound with the destiny of other Nigerians and the earlier we realise that the better for all of us. But of course anyone with an opposing opinion is free to attack my views. It's a free world. Details

Dialogues and Conversations with a Fellow Nigerian – A Response to Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo’s. By Omoba Oladele Osinuga

(GAMJI)

My original article does not display any sympathies with Obasanjo nor can any reasonable person construe it as such. Also how can he call me “egbon” albeit in quotation marks – this is another mark of ignorance on the path of Bello-Barkindo. How could I be an “elder” when he does not even know my age? Off point as my secondary school history teacher would say. Details

On Nigeria, Some Nigerians and The Way Forward. By Paul Adujie

For so long, every Nigeria with two dollars in his pockets takes it to an overseas bank, a demonstration of a lack of faith in Nigeria’s banking sector, Every rich Nigerian who is sick wants overseas medical treatment, every politician with any ailment wants overseas treatment, a clear indictment of Nigeria’s health care system, every rich woman with pregnancy these days wants the baby delivered abroad for perhaps, an American birth certificate, again a demonstration of a lack of faith in the conditions of life in Nigeria and not only for now but even the future; If Nigerians of every strata has no faith in Nigeria why should anyone else? Group Identity Conflicts: Beyond Misconceptions and Stereotypes. By  Abba Gana Shettima

(GAMJI)

“Enough is enough, we are fed up with these crises”, so was President Obasanjo quoted to have angrily warned in Kaduna recently (New Nigerian, 30 November 2002, p.1).  The President’s reaction was naturally one of anger and disappointment.  His regime had witnessed some of the most violent group identity conflicts in the recent history of Nigeria. The Hysteria of Yoruba Bashing - A Rejoinder to Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo’s Article titled The Calm on Yoruba Road. By Omoba Oladele Osinuga

Our Shame. By Zakari Tata Askira, MD, FRCS

The whole world thinks we are an unsafe country. Why kill hundreds of innocent people who could not even afford to pay the taxi fare from Kaduna to Abuja to see Miss World? To those who say Miss World is a sign of "modernity," I say what about 24 hour running water in every Nigerian village and city? Which would they opt for? We cannot change our image in the world by having Miss World contest. Details

Religion and the Search for Truth. By Stephen Lampe

(GAMJI)

Finally, I must emphasize that whether or not we are pleasing to God or to a true Prophet does not depend on the religion or sect we profess nor on the spiritual movements (or factions thereof) to which we belong. It depends solely on our individual spiritual maturity. We are not judged on the basis of whether or not we are Christians, Moslems, Buddhists, adherents of particular spiritual teachings, etc.; we are saved or condemned according to how we stand as individuals. First Ladies: An Unnecessary Evil? By Banjo Odutola

(GAMJI)

In penning this treatise, I am mindful that a decent and honourable man never criticises wives of other men. However, my objective is not to criticise but to initiate a debate or at least make others to ponder on the conundrum posed by the new fancy we refer to as First Ladies. My desire to encourage others to focus on the subject matter may well be precipitous of my proclivity for disliking vicarious advantage and a difficulty to understand an irrefragable need for these First Ladies to become the cynosure like the persons to whom they are married. The New Face of Katsina Politics. By Ibrahim Dan-Halilu

(GAMJI)

The eventual entry of Engr. Nura Khalil into the gubernatorial race of Katsina State after his decamping to the All Nigeria Peoples Party, ANPP, late last month, has no doubt changed the face of Katsina politics.  Until his declaration for the ANPP in an elaborate ceremony held at Kandarawa village some 24 kilometers away from Bakori town in Katsina State on November 23, 2002, Engr. Khalil had been a staunch supporter and die-hard defender of Governor Umar ‘Yar Adua’s administration. Many observers may be asking: Why the sudden change of platform? Details

The Case for Ekueme Presidency. By Okenwa R. Nwosu, MD

In a case of too many cooks spoil the broth, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has registered 28 political parties for the forthcoming 2003 Elections. The history of contemporary politics all over the world explicitly shows the ugly side to multiple parties. Instability, horse trading, men in smoke filled rooms or body sweat filled rooms are the order of the day. Details

American Justice, Right of Appeal and the Nigerian Slave Trade. By Orok Edem

Don’t get me wrong, I abhor crime just like the next person but this arrangement between Nigeria and America smells. I admit America has the right to protect her interest by  telling  Nigeria. If you don’t do something about financial crimes, we would tighten the screws and ruin you financially. But should this be at the expense of denying people their rights and is it the only way to reduce crime in Nigeria? Details

Admiring the 'Izala' Approach. By Suleimaan Umar-Awalloo

(GAMJI)

Pre 1999, various Muslim groups have clamoured for establishment and practice of Shari'a in different ways.  Some expressed mere wish, others even went ahead to stage public demonstration and to some extent went ahead to execute "jungle justice" on persons that were alleged to have committed blasphemy or exhibited actions in the like manner. The 'Shiite' appeared militant of all the groups. Sorry - they don't want to be called 'Shiite' - they are called "Brothers".  The "Brothers" under their leader El-Zak-Zaky were in the vanguard for Islamic revolution in Nigeria and clamouring for Shari' a. In Defense of Almajirai :  Charity is an Islamic Institution. By Ibrahim Dan-Halilu

What we attack is the practice not the institution of charity.  How can any serious Muslim that cares for the image of the religion allow this fraud to continue?  Does your conscience not torment you when you see Muslim women, including aged ones and children go from one brothel to another, from hotel to beer-parlours, play ground to political gatherings and even churches begging for alms?  Does this not dispute your claim that Muslims are keepers of their own poor?  Rather, the entire Nigerian population is the keepers of the Muslims’ poor, which is very contradictory and indicting! The Calm on Yoruba Road. By Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo

When the Yoruba sage, Pa Awo died, IBB in a befitting epitaph described him as "the best president Nigeria never had." In 1996 another action governor was to grace Lagos State. This time, action came in the name of Buba Marwa, a military man from Adamawa State. In spite of the love-hate relationship between the Yorubas and Abacha who appointed Marwa, the governor was accepted beyond the military's wildest imagination because he served Lagos well. 2003: Our Checkmating Politics. By Banjo Odutola

(GAMJI)

In Nigeria, you need no track records of excellence in human endeavour but excellence in falsifying the truth goes a long way. Truth in our politics is old fashioned. H.R.P. Isioma Daniel. By Rabe Kado

[KATSINA]

(GAMJI)

Let's consider the chain of events in a sequence. First was the dastardly publication by This Day newspaper, then the violent over reaction in Kaduna, followed by the revenge killings in Kaduna, Abia, Imo and Plateau states. Note that the opposition to the Miss World pageant had almost petered out before the publication and the overt support it was enjoying from Ministers, parastatals and especially the NTA was beginning to be accepted by all as the norm. So the violence and killings really had nothing to do with the beauty pageant but more to do with the publication Details

Obasanjo and Visionary Leadership. By Okezie Chukwumerije

Obasanjo's Unmitigated and Flagrant Insults on Ndigbo: Time to Reappraise Ohanaeze's Potency/Relevance. By Obodo Ekwelugo

(GAMJI)

Obasanjo landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe ( Is it really International?) Airport Enugu, jumped into a Helicopter obviously to avoid the gullies on the Enugu-Onitsha road which he neglected to repair since he came to power. He came to Anambra State ostensibly to herald the commencement of work on the Onitsha-Owerri death trap called road. This is yet another cheap political deceit and an affront on the intelligence of Ndigbo who Obasanjo suddenly remembered their road at the kick-off of his campaigns. Details

Solutions to Political Treachery. By Dalhatu Yola

The window of deliberation offered by liberal democracy for resolving practical and speculative problems is lost to many Nigerians. Too frequently, resort is made to other possibilities that include coercion, blackmail, outright savagery and threats of balkanisation. An Igbo Presidency in 2003: How Serious, How Prepared? By Uzo Obi

If Ekwueme and Nwachukwu run by simple arithmetic Obasanjo gets the nomination. So it appears the Igbos would have to make the difficult choice between Ike and Ekwueme. Shadows Over 2003 Elections. By Abubakar Jika

Twice Nigeria attempted to organize civilian-to-civilian transitional elections, twice the country failed. Nigeria, a country of great promise not only failed its International friends and admirers, it disappointed itself. In 1964 the Balewa regime organized a civilian-to-civilian elections. It ended organizing a self-succession program. It succeeded itself amidst national uproar. In 1966 the soldiers succeeded them. In 1983 Shagari organized another civilian-to-civilian transition program. It ended organizing a self-succession program. It succeeded itself but was driven away by soldiers in same year. Details

Mr. Mamza, I appreciate your article and I hope the Nigerian news papers are giving you the chance to published your articles.  We owe one another as Nigerians to educate those who do not know about Mr. Mohammed Buhari's contribution to Nigeria.  Thank you sir for looking out for all Nigerians and may God see us through elections of 2003. Barriers to True Democracy in Nigeria. By Victor E. Dike

(GAMJI)

The absence of true federalism in Nigeria is a stumbling block to the nation’s ongoing democratic enterprise. The federal government is very overbearing as it controls about 80 per cent of the resources in the country, leaving state and local governments at its mercy. Therefore, true federalism would enable each region, state, or geopolitical zone to control their resources and to have access to the necessary funds for community development programs. Details

The Evil Twist in PDP: Ekwueme's Fight to Finish. By Abdulrazaque Bello-Barkindo

(GAMJI)

I have looked for a proper explanation as to why the Igbo plays second fiddle since the end of the civil war, in spite of Igbo ingenuity, Igbo productivity and the adventurous nature of the average Igboman but no one has been able to provide one. We in the north have always made the joke that if you visit a settlement no matter how few its inhabitants and find no Igboman amongst them, L-e-a-v-e! Details

Chief Anthony Enahoro Should Read Alexander Pope. By Professor Omo Omoruyi

(GAMJI)

I am not trying to send the esteemed Chief Anthony Enahoro to school, even though there is nothing wrong in a society where I am now resident for adult to go back to school if they want to be proficient in their chosen profession.   Recently the newly elected Congressmen calling themselves Class of 2003 had to undergo “training” in preparation for the new role they would be performing from January 2003. Details

Obasanjo, the Kaduna Massacres and that CNN Interview. By Femi Awonyi

(GAMJI)

President Olusegun Obasanjo’s appearance on CNN on 25 November, a public relations disaster for his person, his office and Nigeria in every sense of the word, should not be allowed to recede into oblivion without a few comments. For the president, through his utterances during the interview, conveyed a wrong impression of our reality to the world. Details

Obasanjo and Yoruba Irredentism. By Dalhatu Yola

(GAMJI)

These days the fad of bashing President Obasanjo has become a tiresome trite. His misdeeds and undoing are already a litany and even after escaping the impeachment guillotine, he still just can’t seem to stop blundering (the query over surreptitious tampering with foreign reserve is till date pending). It is The Economy My Friends. By Paul Ajudie

(GAMJI)

There are many Nigerian Medical Doctors and other Christians Immigrants who work and live in Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and other ultra conservative Islamic or Arab countries and these Nigerians and other Christian Immigrants from America, Europe and every where else, are enduring the rigorous enforcement of Islamic rules. This is because of the lure of stable employment and good pay and not because of the practice of by Saudi Arabia and other Arab or Islam countries of cultural and religious neutrality or the availability of freedom and democracy by any Western standard. The Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him) Was Monogamist at Heart. By Magashi Auwal Ibrahim

(GAMJI)

A thorough investigation of historical facts about his life left one with no option but to admit that, there are only three motives behind his marriage of a number of wives thus: philanthropy, political exigency and behest of Allah, and no further motive can be possibly ascribed. Details

A Review of: Bernard Lewis 2002. What Went Wrong? The Clash Between Islam and Modernity in the Middle East Weidenfeld & Nicholson London. By Ibrahim Ado -Kurawa

(GAMJI)

According to Lewis, Muslims or Middle Easterners cannot attribute their predicament to the Jewish state of Israel . After all how many Jews are there in the world. He discounted the influence of the Jews in the U.S. as a myth or an exaggeration. But he was quick to demonstrate how few Jews were able to defeat the Arabs, who have even outgunned the Jews. I Cannot Write the Story of Mid-Western Region, Edo State, or Bendel State Because I was Too Involved. By Professor Omo Omoruyi

(GAMJI)

A Yoruba Admiral (name withheld) ran to President Babangida to plead with him to drop me from the position of Director General, Center for Democratic Studies because the “Yoruba” leaders thought that I was anti-Yoruba.   Of course they had to mischaracterize what I did in the Constituent Assembly as directed at the Yoruba leader, Chief Obafemi Awolowo. Details

Democratising Blasphemy. By  Kòmbò Mason Braide, Ph.D.

(GAMJI)

It is as downright wicked, mindless, uncharitable, insensitive, and satanically callous to reward an ugly, toothless, bald-headed, hunch-backed, and bow-legged Californian teenage girl convalescing from anthrax, with such silly gifts like a diamond-studded electronic toothbrush, a golden comb, a slim-fit see-through blouse, a skin-tight leotard, and a crown to match, as the winner of a “Miss Universe” beauty contest, as it is to spend valuable brandy-drinking time, or “pure water”-sipping time in Nigeria today, discussing such esoteric tripe like the exploration and exploitation of deep space. Nevertheless, that is precisely what we have set out to do here. Details

Task Before New Parties (1). By Kennedy Emetulu

(GAMJI)

Nigeria is such a suspicious place, that even the early Christmas gift from INEC and its puppeteers of 22 more parties isn't being received eagerly and rapturously by all, not even from some sections of erstwhile supporters of the need for more parties. Indeed, there are those amongst the latter crowd who see the development as a political gimmick by the Obasanjo administration to rein in the opposition into smaller and tinier bits and pick them off, one by one, two by two, like a ruthless vulture, as 2003 closes in. Max Gbanite on IBB: Hero Worshipping or Cheap Name-Dropping? By Mike Ikhariale

(GAMJI)

Apart from Gen. Yakubu Gowon (rtd), no other Nigerian leader has lasted so long in office continuously as IBB. It follows therefore that no other person in the country has enjoyed the singular opportunity to make as much impact on the country as Babaginda had. He is generally known by the sobriquet of Maradona, adopted after the Argentina soccer juggler, Diego. Details

National Security: Which Way Nigeria? By Uwem Inyang

(GAMJI)

It is high time the Nigerian Police are properly paid and equipped with modern equipment in order to combat any rebellion and crime that repulsively undermines our national security. We believe that the Police service in a federal system should be run by the individual states or regions deployed under the state governor. Details

Cashing in on Babangida Bashing. By Max Gbanite

(GAMJI)

General Babangida is a good friend, and I will always defend his good name and his good deeds. His policies cannot be slammed by those who do not have the full picture. It is therefore a service to them that I present the other side of the coin, which is the fact. General Babangida is a gentleman’s gentleman, a soldier’s soldier and, above all, a good man -- a very good man. Take it or leave it. Details

Still on Extremism and Irresponsibility versus Isioma Daniel. In response to Dauda S. Dauda’s rejoinder, “The Comprehensive Dummies’ Guide to Responsibility in Writing”. By Samuel Onipede, Ph.D.

(GAMJI)

There had been authors and writers who had written to malign Jesus Christ, the Christian world did not go berserk by killing or calling for the blood of the writers. One good example is Nicolas Kazantzakis who wrote the book, “The last temptation of Christ” in which he portrayed Jesus Christ giving into sexual desire with Mary Magdalene [subhannallah]. Towards an Edo Agendum. By Professor Omo Omoruyi, mni

(GAMJI)

When the founders of Edokpamakhin in the US told me in the US that what they wanted Chief Enahoro to do was to assume the leadership of Edo in politics, I laughed not because Chief Enahoro was not the competent person to do it.   But would he agree to take it?   That was my question.   I warned the folks in the US that from the time I became conversant with the politics of Nigeria, Chief Enahoro has always shown more interest in national politics than in local politics. Kaduna Riots: Who is to Blame; Who is Responsible. By Babayola Muhammadu Toungo

(GAMJI)

I am taking the whole thing personal because the government is not interested in my well being else they would have put all necessary security measures and mechanisms to forestall the crisis.  Dark clouds have been gathering over the Kaduna political and religious horizon since the Monday following the weekend of the newspaper publication.  Messages were flashed through the GSM network asking Muslims to boycott ThisDay newspaper if they love Allah and his Prophet Muhammad (SAW).  I knew it was just a question of time before we begin to see violent reactions.  But I was surprised the government did nothing, absolutely nothing, about it. The Poverty of Religious Fanaticism, bigotry and Ignorance. By Omoba Oladele Osinuga

(GAMJI)

The Federal Government of which the President is the head has again shown ineptitude and complacency in dealing with such issues (remember Odi, Igala land, Kano and Jos), in typical military dictator fashion by never pre-empting anything. This Government would only adopt the method they are used to. The fire fighter, kill and go, fire for fire, shoot at sight approach. The Kaduna riots should never have happened.

Kaduna Mayhem: Islam is The Loser. By Raji Bello

(GAMJI)

What pains me more than anything else is that by these actions, Muslim have ceded the moral high-ground to non-Muslims. We constantly hear these people preaching to us to allow peace to reign as if our religion does not teach peace at all. What we should teach them, they are teaching us. You cannot dismiss them because events on the ground say it all. Details

Our Dear Dr. Yakubu Gowon (GCFR). By Kòmbò Mason Braide, Ph.D.

(GAMJI)

You will recall when in 1970, some 32 years ago, then Lieutenant Colonel Obasanjo received, on your behalf, the article of surrender from then Major General Philip Effiong of the Biafran Army. For you and for all Nigerians then, it was symbolic of a new Nigeria. However, with the benefit of hindsight, it now seems like Obasanjo did not really share your altruism, and fervent desire of assuring all Nigerians that there is hope in a united Nigeria that Nigerians could trust their aspirations and destiny in, and rebuild from a firmer foundation, given the circumstances of those times. That Call Against Fulanis: A Cynical and Moribund Innuendo. By Mohammed Bala

(GAMJI)

It was the same fellow who once wrote that IBB, Shehu Musa and even the Shehu of Borno were Fulanis! Haba! In this present day Nigeria you don't even know who the Fulanis are? Now another opportunity to fire the contents of his tiny and racially oriented and clouded heart against the Fulanis has become handy in the "Isioma Daniel" saga. Details

The Future of Something that will be left of Nigeria. By Kunle I Sowunmi

(GAMJI)

Some years ago when Abacha jailed "Uncle Sege". Aremu from the Jail House in Jos  asked if Nigerians were already fighting like they did over June 12 for Moshood Abiola his rival from Baptist High School whom he never liked. Yes! he was told but the Nigerians fighting in this case were his family over his properties at Ota and Agbeloba house at Abeokuta. We read he shed tears. That event drew the General to God I believed that was when he wrote the first Chapter of his  book  "The power of Prayer" Details

An Independent Statement on the Sectarian Crises on the Plateau: The Reality of the Matter and the Fulani Case in Context. Forwarded by Musa Adam

(GAMJI)

It is a vital fact to state and note that as soon as the military lessened its presence in the state after the September 2001 happenings, renewed and fresh acts of physical aggression began against the Fulanis and have not abated till date. The guerrilla strategy of "hit and run" is being adopted. The itinerant or nomadic nature of the Fulanis has made such sporadic attacks possible and successful. The Beroms have shown a greater inclination to this method of attack than other so-called natives. Between June to October 2002 alone, the Fulanis lost 138 human lives (excluding almost five times the lives of cattle not to talk of other categories of livestock) in the areas of Jos South, Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Pankshin and Jos East local Government Areas of Plateau State. In Defense of the Name of Prophet Muhammad (Peace and Blessings of Allah Be Upon Him). By Safianu Rabiu

(GAMJI)

he point of note here is that earning a college degree is not synonymous to being educated. Though Ms. Daniel has trained in Journalism, she has also earned nominations for 'Turkey Award' - which I understand to be a USA mock radio talk recognizing persons for their monumental stupidity. Some Nigerians, possibly college graduates, have described her article in the context of freedom of speech! What can I say to this?. My views and that of many others is that the likes of Journalist Ms. Daniel are as dangerous to public peace in Nigeria as are the quarrelsome, unemployed, army of youths on the streets. Details

A Letter Regarding Recent Riots in Kaduna. By Taji Mustafa Fombo

(GAMJI)

The Islamic ideology addresses problems faced by humans whether Muslims or non-Muslims. The man or woman in Lagos, London, Owerri or Sokoto wants to live in safety, raise a family, to trade, buy a car, and to satisfy the many human needs we have. Islam lays out how to satisfy all of these needs, in a manner that results in tranquillity. Details

In Defence of the Almajiri: Charity is an Islaamic Institution. By Dr. Abubakar A. Muhammad

(GAMJI)

I have gone this length, not to necessarily refute my brothers’ write up on what Sanusi Lamido calls, rather cynically, “the begging industry”, and the troops of the “Almajirai” in the North; and Ibrahim Dan Halilu’s apparent contempt of our Ulama, but to clearly declare that Muslims are happy and blessed to be keepers of their own poor. And that doing this is a duty imposed on us by the One who Has made some rich and others poor.  Details

Nigeria is an Ungodly Society. By Sunny Ofili

(GAMJI)

Ken Saro-Wiwa died in the flesh but he remains with us. He is with us because his words live and rings true today just as it did on that faithful day in October 1992 when he granted an interview to my colleague, Chiedozie Ihedioha of The African Guardian. The more things seem to have changed in Nigeria, the more static they remain. Saro-Wiwa, in this interview, granted at a time when very few Nigerians were emboldened to speak against Babangida’s military junta for fear of being thrown into the strongman’s gulag, was fearless and epitomized courage. The Foreigners are to Blame. By Banjo Odutola

“The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Professor Jerry Gana ascribed Nigeria's loss of the hosting rights of the Miss World Beauty Pageant to conspiracy by the international press led by the British press.” “What and where is his evidence? Together By Force? Approach To Stability. By Kunle I Sowunmi

(GAMJI)

Unless, the Christians particularly those in the North are ready to drag the Federal government to court and fight it out to Supreme Court to protect the Nation and the Constitution they are advised to relocate to another part  of the country that share their beliefs and ways of life as predominantly Muslims North is not ready to yield any ground to the western civilization. The present approach  of crying and whining is not only hypocritical  but also deceiving. Details

Calling All Southerners: Nothing is left in Nigeria. By  Samuel ‘Bayo Arowolaju

(GAMJI)

Col. Umar himself a full-blooded Fulani, a devout Muslim and Northerner said, "I believe it is the right of Moslems to abstain from any form of participation in the event. The rights of Moslems, however, stop at where the rights of other Nigerians to participate begin.  Where they cannot avoid that, they can summon the power of their faith and suppress their hearts and minds from being attracted to the ladies no matter what they wear. Anything more than this would be encroaching on the rights of other Nigerians and would therefore constitute an infringement of such rights." Details

Resuscitating Science Secondary Schools Through Community Participation. By Ibrahim Ado-Kurawa

(GAMJI)

The people of Kano and Jigawa States will forever be grateful to Colonel Sani Bello for establishing the science secondary schools that produced first class scientists who are working in some of the most prestigious institutions of the world. Without that initiative those brilliant pupils might not have realized their potentials. One of them was the best WEAC student and he has remained consistent in his endeavor. He is now saving as assistant professor of pathology in a U.S. university and there are also many of such brilliant alumni of the science schools who are a source of pride for Nigeria whose name has been battered by four-one-niners, corrupt leaders and drug pushers. The NZERIBE TURST and the AGUNZE TRUST which were set up in 1979 with GBP175 million sterling and in 1983 with GBP200 million sterling respectively remain unarguably the clear source of my political funding.  As at 1st March 1988, the Auditors, the Chartered Accountants, the appropriate government regulatory bodies, for tax purposes agreed that the Net Asset Value of the Agunze Trust was worth GBP 400 million sterling. (Four hundred million pounds sterling). The Comprehensive Dummies’ Guide to Responsibility in Writing: A rejoinder to Samuel Onipede’sExtremism and Irresponsibility Versus Isioma Daniel”. By D. S. Dauda, M.D.

[UKRAINE]

(GAMJI)

The recent ethno-religious disturbances and subsequent cancellation of the Miss World pageant earlier scheduled for December 7th in Abuja have rightfully attracted a lot of attention and commentaries from different quarters. One remarkable aspect of these commentaries and opinions is the fact that most commentators, irrespective of tribe or religion, admit that Isioma Daniel’s cover story in the Saturday, November 16th edition of ThisDay had indeed slighted the noble prophet and, by extension, the adherents of Islam, freedom of speech notwithstanding. Fulani Terror, the Kaduna Massacres and the Obasanjo Government. By Femi Awoniyi

(GAMJI)

The Christian Association of Nigeria, Yoruba Muslim associations, organisations representing our various nationalities, human rights groups, state governments and both state and federal legislators, among others, should put pressure on the federal government to fish out those who sponsored the latest killings. If we do not force the government to hold the Fulanis to account for their latest dastardly deeds, we would be encouraging them to even bolder and more devastating acts of violence against us. The Quran is also against passing death sentence on innocent Elderly, Women and Children who have not committed any Crime. Death of Constitutionality in Nigeria. By Kunle Sowunmi
