Reaction to the death of Dr. Okadigbo. By Ogbeni Lanre Banjo

(GAMJI)

Under Chief Bola Ige as the Attorney General, many people were killed and their cases were never closed.  Did he care?  Interestingly enough, Honorable Odunayo Olagbaju was gruesomely murdered and the Ministry of Justice under Ige lifted no finger to deter political assassination in Nigeria.  Iyiola Omisore officially reported an attempt to poison him, and the Ministry of Justice under Bola Ige did not feel all these people should receive justice.  Now his own children are looking for justice when no one received justice under their father’s Ministry of Justice. Handshake Across the Niger: The Legacy of Chuba Okadigbo. By Ogbonna George Nwogu

(GAMJI)

Chuba coined Handshake across the Niger in order to underscore the need for unity in Nigeria. He used the expression initially at the palace of the Ooni of Ife when efforts were being made to reconcile the National Party of Nigeria (NPN) with the Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN). This philosophy is anchored on the imperatives of de-emphasizing the things that divide the people of Nigeria and emphasizing the things that unite us. Details

In Geo-Politics as in Local Politics When Money is Factored In, Moral and Political Correctness and Fairness Take a Back Seat. By Dr. Wunmi Akintide

(GAMJI)

When George Bush tells the world "if you are not with us, you are against us, and must be ready to face the consequence" my mind immediately went to the Non-allied nations that were put together under the late Josep Tito of former Yugoslavia in years gone by. George Bush was telling the world that such neutrality and contraption would no longer be tolerated by the only super power on Earth. You can no longer afford to be neutral, because if you are not for America, you are against America, and has therefore become an enemy by not taking a side. Details

FRIDAY DISCOURSE WITH DR. ALIYU TILDE

For Single Term Tenure

(GAMJI WRITER)

The 1999 constitution, like its 1999 ancestor, has provided for the maximum of two terms for any elected president, state governor or local government chairman. For about a year now, and perhaps even before, there have been appeals for the contraction of such tenures to a single term only. Such voices have concluded that two consecutive terms could be deleterious to the survival of democracy in Nigeria. Details

Still on TBO. By  Wada Nas

By asking members of the Buhari Organisation to regularise their membership with the ANPP, it pre-supposes that one has to be an ANPP member to work for Buhari’s presidential bid or that of any candidate for that matter. What the ANPP leadership doesn’t appreciate is that there are hundreds of thousands of sympathisers of TBO who belong to various political parties and an equal number who have no party affiliation at all, but interested only in Buhari becoming president either now or in the future. Journalism in Nigeria: My Fears. By Suleyman bin Muhammad Odapu

(GAMJI)

Is it a Crime to be a Journalist? Is it a criminal act to get to the source in order to report accurately? Is it a crime to go about doing one's lawful duty? I can hear you say "IT IS NOT A CRIME'' this is certainly what is expected. Recent happenings in Nigeria however are proving your answer not only old fashion but wrong. Details

A call to Nigerian Technicians. By  Engr. Obadiah Oghoerore Alegbe

(GAMJI)

Now let me put together the two points raised. When by rotating the magnet within the coil, electricity is produced, go to Awka where God Almighty, put some human beings that can melt and mold iron into any form, let them solder some six blades at sixty degrees distance around the axis of your rotation. Mount the product on a bar, and let a palm wine taper hook it on top of a palm tree in the direction of the wind. The result will be a wind driven generator. Details

A Nest of Killers? By  Attorney Mike Ozulumba

Of Government, Crime, and Charlatan Holymen. By  Chukwuemeka Sunny-Unachukwu

(GAMJI)

I write with much happiness but as well with a cautious indifference at the announcement of Lagos state Ministry of environment to launch serious campaign to remove unapproved Billboards. I am not a believer in the Nigerian experiment, but I think that as humans we have the fundamental knowledge of what is good and what is not. Details

Ndigbo, Victimhood, and Political Nihilism. By Olisa H. Osita

Is Atiku Abubakar Hiding Something? By Babayola Muhammadu Toungo

Nigeria and Nigerians: A World of Disconnect and Discontentment. By Sabella Abidde

(GAMJI)

It is almost impossible to escape the constant cry of the Nigerian media and fellow Nigerians bemoaning Nigeria’s social, economic and political situation. It is a cesspool, we are told. There is a feeling of fatalism in the air, and an expectation that someday, may be someday a messiah will come to the aid of Nigerians and free us from these shackles, anguish and fetid economic, social and political conditions. Really? Details

Pitfalls of Obasanjo's Internationalism. By Khicingwe W. Simji

ORJI UZO KANU- BURNOUT OF A PRESUMED INCANDESCENT STAR

By Chukwuemeka Sunny-Unachukwu

There is an Igbo adage that goes – ‘ If you find a small child doing an egedege dance beside the village tracks look very well near the bushes. There you will find a talented being producing the beats that he is gyrating to’. Orji Uzo Kanu is warming up to make Aso Rock his domicile come 2007. Polio Vaccine: A Response to Dan Halilu. By Dr. Aminu Magashi

(GAMJI)

My piece today is not a rejoinder but an attempt to disabuse the minds of Dan Halilu and any other person and group of individuals, that share the same belief, pessimism and myopic thinking, to the effect that just because some religious non governmental organizations have called for the suspension of polio eradication, it is synonymous with future political, socio economic backwardness and capable of generating serious health hazards. Ndi-Igbo and Biafran War Apologies-A Rejoinder. By Odi Maduneke

(GAMJI)

The British colonial masters designed tribalism and inter- ethnic rivalry into Nigeria from inception in order to divide and conquer. The struggle for independence was led by the Igbo and Yoruba elite and so the colonialists allied themselves with the northern elite in order to keep the activists in check. But their ace was to divide the Igbo elite from the Yoruba elite. Details

Media, Politics and Deliberative Process in Nigeria. By Tokunbo Awoshakin

(GAMJI)

Democracy appears able to survive in Nigeria amidst the sea of doubts caused by ethno- political violence and the period of recession through which the country is passing. It seems as well that the people of my country, judging by the overwhelming interest and involvement of Nigerians in the last elections and the resistance of the attempt to close up the local government council polls, have not lost sight of the true significance of democracy. An Open Letter to god on Ninety-Nine Percent Corruption Called Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). By Lanre Ogundipe

The point that forced me into writing this letter to you is to bring to your notice the danger posed to the lives of your people by the activities of an institution that is supposed to provide one of the most important social services to the nation and its people that has now been turned into an anti-people organization whose intent and purpose is to defraud, steal, pilfer, and squander our resources Details

Fair Trade and the WTO Meeting in Cancun, Mexico. By  Stephen Lampe

(GAMJI)

The most developed countries, especially the United States and the European Union, desire to improve even further their advantageous relative positions in the global economy. Obasanjo Tells Nigerians at African Independent Television Signals Launched in the USA. By Dr.  Wunmi Akintide

September 20th would be remembered as a watershed in Nigeria’s Global Television debut with the World. That was the day President Obasanjo came to New York to personally launch the African Independent Television signals in the United States. Like so many Nigerians, I was privileged to witness the occasion at the Grand Hyatt’s 5 Star Hotel in Manhattan, amidst the New York skyline which is first of a kind in the greatest city in the World. Why Biafra Lost (A Riposte to Revisionism). By Mazi K. Ani

(GAMJI)

There has been a proliferation of Biafra and Ojukwu-related articles lately in the Nigerian cyber media. This is both a reflection of the critical role of one man -His Excellency Gen. Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu- in the historical turning point of Nigeria as well as the Igbo proverb that after brave men have done the real fighting, the effeminate would remain at home by the fire-side and tell the tales. Polio’s Last Stand. By  Saleh Yamusa

(GAMJI)

As a recent graduate in Microbiology, I consider my self as an embryo in the academic sphere, yet I feel I have a piece of advice to give. First, let the government set up a strong and reliable committee of experts to investigate the veracity of the fact that such vaccine contains so and so substances. Second, let the authorities imitate other developed countries and sponsor immunization program using IPV, however expensive, instead of OPV, for it poses no danger as indicated above. Details

The Tragedy of Caligula. By Aonduna Tondu

(GAMJI)

The challenge for Nigeria's elites is to work to reverse the curse of  Caligula which is the bane of our national life . Refusing to confront the ghost of Caligula in our polity is the surest way to repeat "419" in 2007. So far, the Nigerian people have generally shown cowardice and inconsistency in confronting the excesses of their local tormentors. Details

National Interest and the Politics of Desperation: A Rejoinder to Dr. Aliyu Tilde's "For a Breathing Space Before 2007". By Kennedy Emetulu

(GAMJI)

Again, we can taste the insult to the Igbo when he talks about "the supremacy of money in their politics"; what does he mean? That the Igbo are the only ethnic group to have developed money politics into an art or religion in Nigeria? That they are the only people who can sell their mother once the price is right? Frankly, I fail to see how Dr Tilde is doing justice to the Igbo by this kind of stigmatization and crude stereotyping. Details

Becoming the Turning Point On Biafran War View: Can That Be Governor Orji Kalu For The Igbo? By Patrick Iroegbu

2007: Atiku for President, God Forbid. By Ugochukwu Ejinkeonye

(GAMJI)

Well, only two weeks ago, Atiku displayed a sample of his leadership style when his security men, in his presence, beat to coma a Daily Independent photo-journalist, without Atiku intervening to save the dying young man. As the nation recoiled at this clear advertisement of pre-historic cruelty, some fellows like Olusegun Adeniyi of ThisDay went to town in stout defence of Atiku telling us that the V.P. was not as heartless as he showed himself to be. PEOPLE & POLITICS

BY MOHMAMMED HARUNA

Celebrating Ige's life and times

(GAMJI WRITER)

I had expected it to be a gathering of Who is Who in the politics of Yorubaland if not of Nigeria, considering Chief Bola Ige's status as the Arole Awo (the inheritor of Awo's mantle), but although it was not exactly a damp squib, the gathering at the Conference Centre of the University of Ibadan last Saturday, September 13, to celebrate Uncle Bola's life and times on the occasion of his 73rd birthday, was, for me, a bit of a let-down. Some of his closest friends like Nobel laureate Wole Soyinka and Dr. Yemi Ogunbiyi were there, as of course, were members of his family, but as Femi Falana, lawyer and human rights activist, noted in what I thought was the most powerful speech of the day, too many of Uncle Bola's friends were already proving themselves to be fair-weather...Details

An Objective Analysis of Atiku Abubakar. By Reno Omokri

But very uncharacteristically for a man in power in Nigeria he showed contrition and remorse right away. Details

Blame Igbo First. By Olisa Adigwe

Blame Igbo first, blame Igbo second, blame Igbo always.  Last week the works and housing minister, Chief Adeseye Ogunlewe, weighed in with his brand of blame Igbo first.  He blamed Igbo for the bad roads in their region.  While agreeing that the condition of majority roads in South East are "worse than hell", that "he pity anybody from South East who has had to ply these roads". Sycophancy: the new directive principle for Nigeria web columnist? By Francis Adewale

I thought we have heard the last of them, but hell no! They are still very much lurking around. Their mouths is their god, their goal is our ruin. The new Nigeria web columnists are one hell of a motley crowd. Details

Boni and His Goebbles. By  Babayola Muhammadu Toungo

When I saw the caption reading “An Apology for Boni”, I expected the commissioner to apologise for the OPC approach the governor took to such a weighty issue rather than the dreary effort put up by Mr. Zadok.  I expected to read an apology for the wanton disregard and childish grumpiness displayed by Boni Haruna by causing the door to the office of the Assistant Registrar, Litigation, be broken. Governor Kalu: Shun this Oddity, Boycott this Ignoramus. By Ikechukwu Amazu

If ever there were any doubts that Mr Orji Uzor Kalu, who masquerades as governor of Abia state, might have been misquoted over his so-called "apologies"- saga over the Igbo genocide of 1966-1970, his recent press conference in Lagos airport is as definitive as it can be that we are indeed dealing with a dreadful crime. SOCIO-CULTURAL EVOLUTION

Sycophancy: the new directive principle for Nigeria web columnist

By Francis Adewale

Not too long ago, I wrote about the so-called “me-too” web-columnist, now they have refined their acts. To imagine that a Nigerian will sit behind his computer and praise the perfidious regime presently stalking our land beats me hollow...Details

NDI-IGBO AND BIAFRAN WAR APOLOGIES BY Olisa H. Osita

[California, USA]

(GAMJI)

From radio Biafra, my record shows that, the number of Nigerian soldiers killed by Biafran gallant armed forces during the war were more than the number of Nigerians who enlisted in Nigerian army, navy and air-force all put together in that period, under review.  Okoko Ndem, the Biafran news anchor man, was an outstanding broadcaster and he delivers his news with scintillating punch and penetrating impact. The only snag, though, but unknown to most of us listeners at the time during the war, was that Okoko Ndem lived and broadcasted from under-ground Biafran bunker for obvious security reasons.

STOP THE CAMPAIGN OF HATERED

By Obadiah Oghoerore Alegbe

(GAMJI)

Apartheid is being introduced into Nigeria through the back door in the name of investments. Nigerians are living in absolute darkness. I listened to Fela’s song saying that our people reached bus stop, and bus no dey, they put hand for pocket money no dey. Medical drugs are so high that our people can not buy them. People are dying everyday in an oil rich country out of hunger and diseases. Politicians look the other way when our nation is in deep crisis. Postal service is the worst example of services. Polio Vaccine, Kaduna Flood, et el: The Wages of Stupidity  By Ibrahim Dan Halilu

(GAMJI)

It may take a serious re-engineering and re-orientation for Nigerians, especially those of us from the northern part of the country to be salvaged from the grievous consequences of the stupidity of our so-called well-informed folks.  In the last couple of months, an unnecessary controversy has been triggered off by a section of northern Muslim scholars (Ulama) over the polio vaccine.  In a communiqué issued after an emergency meeting in Kaduna over a month ago, the Jama’atu Nasrul Islam, JNI has called for the suspension of polio immunization programme in states of the North due to what it described as “reports alleging the contamination of the vaccine with substances believed to induce infertility and to contain HIV virus.”

Military Rebellion of July 29, 1975: The coup against Gowon   (6)

By Dr. Nowa Omoigui

(GAMJI WRITER)

Another important factor – in the view of some - was the replacement of then Brigadier (later Major General) Hassan Katsina as Chief of Staff (Army) with Major General David Ejoor in late 1972.  Hassan (who was actually junior to Ejoor) moved up to become the Deputy Chief of Staff SHQ (to then Rear Admiral Wey) and Federal Commissioner for Establishments. Hassan was a very confident officer who could look Gowon in the eye and tell him what was going on in the Army.  He also had back channels to far north sentiments and Gowon may have thought – professional considerations aside – that he would be more useful as a political symbol at the Supreme Headquarters dominated by he and Wey who were both Christians...Details

PEOPLE & POLITICS WITH MOHAMMED HARUNA The death of Alhaji Umaru Sanda Ndayako

(GAMJI WRITER)

When he died in the early hours of September 1, the Etsu was said to be hale and hearty. Certainly he showed no sign whatsoever of any ill-health throughout the weeks before his death when he toured the country as the chairman of what many, most certainly the Nigerian Bar Association, see as an ill-advised panel to reform Local Governments as the third tier of governance in the country. Ill-advised or not, his choice by the federal authorities to chair the local government reform panel was one more national assignment which reflected the high regard in which the Etsu was held by all. PETITION TO PROTECT DEMOCRACY

Forwarded By Auwal Musa Rafsanjani

(GAMJI)

The Honourable Speaker,

House of Representatives

National Assembly

You will recall that on June 18, 2003 President Olusegun Obasanjo set up a presidential committee on local government reform. Ostensibly, the government’s intention is to reform the local government system. Other factors point, however, to a different purpose: which is that the government intends to create a local government system that is subject to the government of the day, perhaps by putting them in the control of traditional rulers, leading to a one party dictatorship in Nigeria. Amongst these is the deliberate refusal to hold local government election since May 2002...Details

Ojukwu's Mis-Leadership Of Ndigbo

By Odi Maduneke

The article by H. Osita is refreshing. It is about time Ndigbo started to face the truth. This will help them get over what I call the Biafran syndrome. This involves use of the pogrom in Northern Nigeria in 1966, the emotion with which the war was fought as well as the institutional tribalism of Nigeria to cover up the disastrous mis-leadership of Ojukwu and his cronies that brought Ndigbo to their present predicament...Details

BluntPoint (11): Virtues and Limits of Monetization

The Obasanjo administration has introduced a policy it calls monetization in which public servants are given specific sums, according to their level in the service, to cater for their residential accommodation and personal transport. Broadly speaking, unless it is abused, it is an innovation that should be welcome by majority of Nigerians. But welcoming the policy is one thing that many of those affected are not willing to do...Details

Still  A Malignant Cancer: Feminism In  Literature And Society By Ugochukwu Ejinkeon

(GAMJI)

It does seem that if there is one thing Australia appears to possess far much in excess, it is women, young and old, who revel in hallowed obscenities and unabashed immorality, women who have no qualms about becoming signposts of the worst kind of female debasement and moral degeneracy...Details

Interpretation of Shariah on Stoning to Death. By Suleiman Omipidan

(GAMJI)

The practice of the Holy Prophet as well as his authentic sayings, makes it clear that in secular matters or a multi-religious setting such as ours, Muslims should obey even such of their rulers as are not Muslims. In view of the above and over-riding concept of no compulsion in religion, Muslims in a Majority state do not need to be the prerogative legislative authority. Nothing must be done to clash with the political peace of this country. Details

God's Complex Phenomenon - A Dangerous Obsession: The Case of Nigeria. By Chief Okechukwu E. Asia

(GAMJI)

Having lived in Nigeria for two years now, I have come to feel the grip of the political/social experience of the Nigeria people. You may have the greatest ideas of how to move the country forward to economic prosperity and what have you. But the faster you thought about those ideas, the faster you are frustrated by the deep cancer in the bone of almost every Nigerian - god's complex phenomenon. Details

Reading for Leisure. By Bala Yahaya

(GAMJI)

Many people allow themselves to ditch this great pastime relying on the not-so-plausible excuse of "I don't have time for reading" and thus allow even incisive and analytic newspaper features to pass them.  Thus, at the individual level, we should make conscious effort to "create time for reading" Details

Privatisation in Nigeria: Critical Issues of Concern to Civil Society. By Otive Igbuzor

(GAMJI)

The implementers of the programme are in a hurry to sell off all state owned enterprises even without adequate preparation taking into cognisance labour, gender and equity issues. Both the political leadership and the implementers of privatisation are carrying on as if privatisation is the only solution to poorly performing state owned enterprises, smuggling and effective distribution of goods and services. Nigerian Journalists and the Policed State….By  Mcphilips Nwachukwu

(GAMJI)

Outside the military establishment, the only other place that the  power brokers unleashed their terror was on journalists. The incarceration of Chris Anyanwu, former Commissioner of Information in Imo State and publisher of defunct, The Sunday Magazine (TSM), Kunle Ajibade of The News magazine, and Niran Malolu, formerly editor of The Diet and presently, a commissioner in Ogun State are but few examples of symbolic voices of members of the pen profession, who paid dearly for being members of the public trust. Do the Votes Count? Final Report of the 2003 General Elections in Nigeria Reviewed. By Emma Ezeazu

(GAMJI)

From the report, it can be inferred that in the area of management of elections, Nigeria has indeed taken several steps backwards. A comparative look at TMG’s report in 1999 and the current report clearly show that Nigeria recorded no progress with the conduct and management elections in 2003. Details

A Communist Amongst Failed Capitalists. By Orok Edem

(GAMJI)

The problem with intellectual purists, is that simple things evade them. Mr. Madunagu, unleashed his cerebral and organizational capabilities against Eka Edem, because her son wanted to "chop" from the "Ibo man". Details

Confidential Letter to Mr. President. From Earnest U. Anthony

(GAMJI)

Nigeria was growing steadily after the war because of the purpose that preserved her from disintegration and the light of the true Gospel (spiritual revival) she has started to receive before suddenly she went into Festac “77” to glorify idols of many nations ignorantly.  The nation died spiritually as a nation like Adam who died but was still living, laboring and sweating physically. Contradictions of the So-called Nigerian Dilemma. By Omoba Oladele Osinuga

(GAMJI)

For anyone to say that, “the Hausa / Fulani and the Yoruba’s had since resorted to setting a new unknown standard by the systemic destruction of both the known standard and the pioneers of the known standard” is missing the point of the problems inherent in Nigeria today. Not one ethnic group or geographical region is singularly responsible for the catastrophic mess in which our beloved nation finds itself Details

Compulsory to the Muslims. By M.A. Dankande, MNIM

(GAMJI)

Finally, whether the European Union has abolished death-sentence in their member countries or not, it is not our concern.  As Muslims nobody can deprive us of our religious duties or make us compromise our religious doctrines and expect to be in peace. Details

The Lantern Government in Nigeria. By Abdulrahman Muhammad Dan-Asabe Ph.D.

(GAMJI)

I am afraid that careful observation has shown that the present Nigerian government has deliberately taken-on this unique characteristic of the lantern: helping and shining on far-away people and countries but Nigeria and its citizens. Details

More Complex than Politics. By Edwin Madunagu

(GAMJI)

ON Saturday, August 09, 2003, at about 10.30 a.m, I heard a loud commotion outside the gate of our residence located in a rural community in Calabar South Local Government Area. I asked two young members of our household to go out and check out the matter, and then moved away from the gate, to shield myself from further distractions. But my respite did not last for long. The two young women who went out soon came back with a report for the rest of us. I summarise the story. Details

Homosexuality and Apostasy. By Candidus Uzokwu Obiajunwa

(GAMJI)

Homosexuality is clearly an aberration and a sinful violation of God or natures design for sex or the marriage union.  It is dirty, ugly, demeaning, and unwholesome.    It is selfish, irresponsible and unbefitting of a gentleman or lady talk less of a church or religious person. Details

Of North and South. By Reno Omokri

(GAMJI)

When we in the South are still engaging in voting on purely tribal sentiments, Northerners massively voted for a Southerner to become president in 1993. They forsook a homeboy to follow their hearts and vote for a better candidate. Although one man and his cabal later truncated that election, the general show of brotherhood by the masses of the North to those of the South has remained unique in Nigeria and unreciprocated. Virtual Reality In 4-19 Manoeuvres By Kòmbò Mason Braide Ph.D.

(GAMJI WRITER)

Frequently, we are being calculatingly hoodwinked, by people who have something to gain by manipulating our consciousness with misleading appearances. Indeed, much of Nigeria’s economy is based on providing Nigerians with deceptive imitations, ranging from fake medicines, “original Taiwanese” electronics, false bank accounts, fake “genuine” spare parts, and fake awards, degrees, and certificates, to false eye lashes, fake chieftaincy, and academic titles, false gold teeth, wigs, false fingernails, false skin complexions,....
