Kano Emirate and Islamic Scholarship: A New Dawn By Abbas Yushau Yusuf
I was surprised and elated by the sermon delivered Today Friday the 13th of June by the Emir of Kano Malam Sunusi Lamido Sunusi the 2nd at the Government House Jumuat Masjid Its indeed the dawn of a New Era in the Kano Emirate Council when the State Government announced the appointment of an economist and public affairs commentator cum Islamic Scholar as the heir apparent to the Late Alhaji Ado Bayero.
No doubt Malam Sunusi's Sermon has sent down shivers into the spines of individuals who have the fear of God Almighty Allah to bow down to the decision of the Almighty on who becomes what and when its due as the overall Kingmaker on earth.
Delivering the sermon immediately he was ushered into the MASJID accompanied with Traditional Phaphalenia by the Emirate Palace Guards Inherited from Late Emir Ado Bayero is the Elderly Sarkin Dogarai and Galadiman Dogarai while Ulamas drawn from across the nook and crannies of the State were anxiously waiting for the arrival of Malam Sunusi Lamido Sunusi the 2nd to Deliver the Jumuat Sermon and lead in the congregational Prayers of teeming Muslim Faithfuls at the Government House Jumuat Masjid where he was holding court Since the announcement of his appointment on June 8 2014,
Prayers were offered for the repose of the soul of the Late Emir in Batches by the Ulamas of different Sects to ensure spread and avoid bias in praying for the soul of the Late Emir.
The Emir of Kano Malam Muhammad Sunusi the Second mounted the pulpit without a single paper on his hand unlike other Imams who deliver Sermons with a Piece of Paper reading from the Text they have written before coming to Masjids to present sermons to the congregation.
As usual with imams the Imam of Kano who double as the Emir (remember Imamukum Amirukum) Muhammadu Sunusi the 2nd started reading the sermon up Head without reading from any text, while criss crossing chapters of the Holy Quran the Glorious Book of Allah the only Scripture of all Muslims the world over.
No doubt his Khutba has vindicated the Shamakin Danmaje when we interviewed him a day after Malam Sunusi the 2nd ascended the throne of his forefathers told a group of Journalists that the Emir has committed the Glorious Quran into memory.
When the emir mounted the pulpit delivering the sermon in the presence of prominent Islamic Scholars he started citing verses on the necessity that every mortal breathing on earth must taste death.
My heart was gladdened to the core when our New Emir was citing those verses remembering people that their sojourn on earth must terminate when Death Knocks either prepared or unprepared. These are verses i can remember the Emir recited while delivering his first Jumuat Sermon to the entire people of Kano.
''Innaka Mayyutun wa wa innahum Mayyutun'' thumma innakum yaumal Kiyamati inda rabbikum takhtasimun''
Wama Muhammadun Illa rasulun Kad Khalat min kablihirrusul afa inmmata au kutilankalabtum ala aakabikum waman yanqalib ala aqibaihi falan yadurrallaha shay 'a.''
These are some of the Few verses recited by the Emir of Kano on the necessity of Death no matter how highly placed he is.
On the issue of conferring leadership on His servants the Emir told the congregation citing verses of the Glorious Quran from different chapters.

I ponder over my self that those opposing the ascendancy of Emir Muhammad Sunusi 2 should have a rethink that an Islamic Scholar who are the descendants of the prophets is the Emir of Kano.

This economist who is the heir to Gidan Dabo is a wise choice on our traditional institutions which was bastardized due to its eroding influence in Northern Nigeria but with the appointment of Emir Muhammad Sunusi the 2nd Traditional Institutions in Nigeria and Kano will be reformed and the true teachings of Islam in line with modernity be rooted.
Kano Emirate is indeed interwoven with Scholarship as presented and Led by Emir Muhammadu Sunusi 2 a replica of his grandfather who led prayers during his time as Emir of Kano.
