Jigawa
State–Too Much Too Soon?

As
one privy to know Executive at Arms length before
his
ascension as Governor, I should say he has become
hard
to reach. You are not sure
any of the messages
sent
to him by fax or phone gets to him.
No he has
forgotten
the days gone by. You
will hear so many of such from people close to
Saminu
Turaki. In a lecture I
offered on behalf of
Alhaji
Murtala Muhammed during the last Borno Economic
Summit
, I referred to Jigawa state as a ‘State toWhy?
This
is a state that started by elevating the status
of
teachers to a more enviable stance, this at least
reduced
the number of good teachers migrating to other
jobs.
The
next was the delving into the Internet world with
all
the strength that was possible. At
a time I knew
when
the governor beckoned to the Northern Governors &
Federal
Government to join him and cold was their
response.
Now
that a season is gone and another is on the way,
what
will be said of Jigawa state is nothing but … TOO
MUCH
TOO SOON. You will not
believe me till you hear
the
report CNN did on the Solar Energy option in
Jigawa
State
.
It is one of the first
times in so long
a
time that the world will say some thing good about
Nigeria
and so different from the one they did of
delta
state’s Oil people’s cry for outside listening
ears.
NEPA need’s to go to
Jigawa
State
and learn a
little
lesson on Rural Electrification.
Jigawa
state should not look back on the dream to make telephone accessible to
all people at every level.
N1.00
/ minutes have never been dreamt by even the
Federal
Government (another lesson for NITEL maybe).
The
way forward for the state is to maintain its
course
and the harvest which will soon start coming.
While
some of us are prayerful that the other
Governors
of especially the Northern States will
follow
the example, because the entire world is
computer
directed, so knowledge of computer is a plus
for
all.
But
before then, the State needs to look at how to
exploit,
software/Hardware knowledge to money
generation
schemes for the populace. The
moment the
state
citizens discover the power of the internet,
small
will be the drag to making
Jigawa
State
the
India
of
Nigeria
, the
Silicon Valley
of
Africa
and the
pride
of black gold (petrol) will discover too late
that
the highest money generators are closer to the
web,
than the breaking of oil pipes, hijacking of Oil
workers
and terrorism in the name of fight for rights.
The
need of the human resources especially in the
Middle East
will be close to met from here than the Indian/American option for the
Arabic /Islamic upbringing of the citizens.
Forgive
my computer bias, it should be understood.
But
for
America
to start looking at Jigawa state as a
potential
exporter of Gum Arabic, it is a sign of the
Labours
of Alhaji Ibrahim Saminu Turaki, Mijin Hajia
(Princess)
Samira will never be in vain.
More
still the Governor should also move outwards to
other
States and enable private investors/citizens get
payable
services from
Jigawa
State
. This will reduce
the
wait for return on investments and increase the
benefactors
of the mass directed projects of his Administration. Encouraging still
is the number of Nigerians, at home and abroad that will joyfully join
hands to contribute in some little way to make your dream become a
reality, unlike the likes of Emeagwali’s that might be needing
permissions, I am sure of so many others like the USAfricanOnline.com,
The Dele’s of AfricaService.com, the Gamji.com (Iro Samaila especially
has increased the Northern content of the Internet to a very serious
level and I have heard of his silently contributing in some projects at
home.
Keep the flag high and
never give up our Mr. Governor.

"You
have it easily in your power to increase the sum total of this world's
happiness now. How? By giving a few words of sincere appreciation to
someone who is lonely or discouraged.
Perhaps you will forget tomorrow the kind words you say today,
but the recipient may cherish them over a lifetime."
