Pope John Paul II – Matters arising

I read Dr Aliyu Tilde’s article titled “Pope John Paul II” and would like to seize the opportunity to make a few comments. One of the achievements attributed to the late Pope was his contribution towards the end of Communism in USSR. I would want to say that I would continue to remember him for helping to bring us to the present situation we have found ourselves without his intention. The situation is that in which a rogue nation, the USA, has become a lone super power in this world. In the past the presence of USSR has served to check some excesses of the US. Ever since the USSR collapsed, we have all become subjects of the USA. She decides on regime change and she does it without a second thought.

The leaders of countries especially developing ones are her stooges falling head over heels to satisfy her demands. Those that are stubborn are crippled through policies that either make their country’s economy prostate or by direct sanctions under some fabricated pretexts. In certain times she plants the seeds of discord among citizens of countries that will give way to instability. The late Pope was also said to have helped in a way in achieving peace between Jews and Palestinians. Seeing the daily unrest in that region I wonder what manner of peace that is. I wonder also how he would have succeeded because it is well known that the Jews do not like Christians. This statement can be confirmed by any Nigerian Christian who has performed the Christian pilgrimage to Jerusalem and who does not want to be economic with the truth. I believe you will agree with me that the dislike can be traced back in history to the time of Prophet Isa (AS) when the Jews attempted to kill him.

Lastly, the Pope’s death has given a chance for people to see the faces of hypocrites and to hear their utterances. The late Pope was the head of the Catholic Church that presumably has the largest following among the various Christian denominations in the world. It could therefore be said without fear of contradiction that he was the head of the Christians in this world. He was one of those who pleaded with George Bush to give Weapons Inspectors time to complete their task in Iraq before embarking on war that has claimed thousands of innocent lives and many wounded and God knows how many more lives will be lost before the puppet government succeeds in establishing peace in the country. Bush refused to heed to that call. I wonder why if not public deceit and hypocrisy that Bush and Tony Blair attended the late Pope’s burial. These are the leaders of the West for all to see.

Thank you sir.
