Apart from the fact that he had exceeded the normal age limits as stipulated by law and the president has no power whatsoever to extend his stay in office, but which he has illegally done. The present IGP, Sunday Ehindero has failed woefully in the discharge of his duties and responsibilities in the country. The politically motivated assassinations are a very serious and dangerous dimension to the already very volatile political situation in the country and the IGP has not been able to apprehend anybody. Just come to think of it, if you take stock of what has been happening from 1999 till date, nobody has been caught for these political killings. It’s all left to speculation. After so much noise is made, everything dies down, so people can still be bold enough to continue to plan these acts and carry them out. In fact, without mincing words it can be said that, this culture of impunity encourages the perpetration of these dastardly acts and other heinous crimes.

When Funsho Williams was brutally murdered in his bedroom in Dolphin estate in Lagos, one would have thought perhaps, that would be the last of such dastardly act, going by the outcry of the public to the ever-increasing spate of politically motivated assassinations. But that was definitely not to be, as Dr Ayodeji Daramola was mercilessly killed in Ekiti State, fueling the speculation that the killing process in the country will continue unabated. In the case of Funsho Williams, when the IGP came to Lagos State, he never visited the Governor of Lagos State, Bola Tinubu, who is the chief security officer of the state, instead, he went to the house of the deceased in company of Bode George, who ordinarily should have been one of the suspects that should have been thoroughly questioned. In the case of Dr. Daramola , the IGP went straight to Ekiti State Governor, Ayo Fayose, on arrival in the state, and all the stakeholder have said repeatedly and consistently that Ayo Fayose is responsible for the death of Dr. Daramola, because of his rising profile and Fayose’s abhorrence for intellectuals. So, has the IGP not demonstrated that he is political in the discharge of his duties? Has he in any way demonstrated any competence? Is this the kind of character that should be saddled with the onerous task of ensuring security in the country?

In the case of the assassination of Dr. Daramola in Ekiti State, it was said that, the late politician was invited to a political meeting by the chairman of a faction of PDP, Dr. Ahmadu Ali, the said meeting never took place and Daramola never returned home. So, what has the IGP done about this? Or does Ahmadu Ali enjoy immunity too? The fact of the matter is that life is so cheap in the country, and the IGP does not care a hoot about the state of general insecurity in the country. So, with the overwhelming evidence provided for the police, as to where the killers of Daramola could be, to the greatest surprise of all perspective Nigerians nothing is done about it. Is this how to deal with the scourge of assassinations in the country. We don’t even know who will be the next victim. But very clearly what we have in the country today is a political IGP.

In some other parts of the world, the IGP would have voluntarily resigned, but in Nigeria, if he is not sacked or forced to go, he would stay put in office. This is a person that has exceeded the normal age limit specified by law, what is he doing in office again? And, his presence is causing  more harm than good, as people are just been killed like chickens without any trace at all, is this how to ensure that there security of lives and property in the country? This shows that the IGP is not only bereft of ideas, but he has lost focus and definitely run out of steam. The man is thoroughly fatigued and should therefore retire and allow another person take a shot at the job. He is physically and mentally exhausted, and therefore a liability rather than an asset, hence, the exigent need for him to vacate his present position.

The negative multiplier effects of the general insecurity in the country is too horrendous to quantify, there is so much uncertainty about human lives in the country, if one goes out , nobody can be sure of coming back in one piece. What a big shame! And this government is behaving as if everything is alright. This why it has been said that, governance in Nigeria has become a disappearing phenomenon, it everyman to himself, God for us all, just take a look at the kind of lawlessness that goes on in the Niger-Delta, the gun-running coupled with hostage-taking, is this how the affairs of a country is managed in any civilized world?
