It took him 15 long agonizing years for him to claim to release the result of the June12 1993 election. But he left us the apostles of June 12 more traumatized and severely annoyed. Not only did he try to distort facts  but with impunity knowing that his master as at then and now will still pay him any way.

But this distortion of facts is too much to bear and the reaction from the general public is unprecedented. What are we talking about here?

Professor Humphrey Nwosu, chairman of the defunct NEC is making effort to tell whoever cares to listen that General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida did not annul the June 12 1993 election rather it was General Sani Abacha, Murtala Nyako, Aliyu Mohammed and other that annulled it.  To go straight to the point Babangida in one of the interviews he granted the press acknowledged that he only cancelled the election and that he did not annul it. There was that debate last year trying to know the difference between cancelling and annulment.  Ordinarily that disclosure by General Babangida that he only cancelled the election and not annulment would have put to rest this debate but for the benefit of those who may not have seen that interview, let us look at Babangida’s antecedence to confirm that he actually masterminded and annulled the June 12 1993 election and nobody else.

IBB as he is fondly called by his admirers has always said and confirmed that not only was he in power and Government but that he was in charge and that he was the military president and commander in chief of the armed forces of Nigeria and he acted it out practically in all his eight years of military adventure as he put himself.

All the acts and actions Babangida took prior to June 12 1993 pointed to the fact that he wanted to perpetuate himself in power till he dies in power or be chased out like Idi Amin of Uganda.

The first case was the IMF debate of 1985. He had assembled some of the best brains in the country then such as Professor Aluko, Professor Ayagi and many others who advised him against implementing the IMF conditions but Babangida unilaterally implemented the IMF conditions even without recourse to his AFRC as he styled it. Babangida was so dictatorial that he sacks his Military chiefs and members of the Armed Forces Ruling Council at his whims and caprices.

The first to test Babangida’s dictatorial bitter pill was a gentleman and a pure breed Officer Commodore Ubitu Ukiwe who was suppose to be Babangida’s 2nd in command as the chief of General Staff. The Commodore incurred General Babangida’s wrath when he publically said that Babangida unilaterally dragged Nigeria into OIC organization of Islamic conference without  recourse to the AFRC which Babangida’s boy Brig-General John Shagaya who was minister of Internal Affairs even confirmed. On that excuse alone Babangida  fired Ukiwe from the AFRC and retired him prematurely from the Navy. General Babangida never liked working with intelligent officers and therefore he surrounded himself with the Abachas, Aikhomus, Nyakos and Gambo Jimetas of Nigeria and the Nigerian state paid for it dearly and is paying for that misrule up till now.  As a maximum Military head of State as he was then, Babangida was the state and the state was Babangida and Maryam and had the power to fire and hire members of the armed forces ruling council and military and police service chiefs. What he dreamt of then becomes a law in Nigeria and that was why he changed the nomenclature of everything under the sun in Nigeria. While under military rule we were used to head of State he said he was military president. We were used to chief of staff supreme headquarters he said his own was chief of General staff. Well we were used to supreme military council, he said his own was armed forces ruling council. In fact in the course of his eight years of all forms of experimenting with Nigeria he changed the name of his AFRC to PRC and NSDC to suit his tastes at any particular time. He distorted military ranks and created fictitious ranks for his cronies.

General Babangida did not spare the civil service from his dictatorial experimentation, he completely changed the nomenclature of the civil service and created the title Director General and in fact at one time he called his ministers secretary akin to the British system. I am bothering you readers with all the above explanation to let you know that General babangida squarely annulled the June 12 election and nobody else as is being portrayed by Professor Humphrey Nwosu .

To confirm that General Babangida was the alpha and the omega of his military regime, on two occasions he dissolved the AFRC and re-constituted into PRC at one time and NSDC at another and he equally converted his chief of General staff into a civilian vice President in his anticipation of   transforming himself into civilian president. It was the same Babangida who promised to hand over to civilians in 1990 which he failed to do but shifted it to 1992 which he yet again failed to honor until the June 12 1993 nemesis caught up with him and he was eventually forced out by civilians led by chief MKO Abiola.

It was Babangida who squarely annulled June 12 election to perpetuate himself in power. He was the principal player, the referee and in fact everything as far as June 12 1993 was concerned.

He was banning and unbanning politicians at his whims and caprices. All Babangida’s acts and actions while he was military head of state pointed to the fact that he wanted and wished to be head  of state for life. Humphrey Nwosu must therefore apologize to Nigerians and the International community for criminal misrepresentation and perjury. Babangida annulled June 12 1993 election and is criminally liable whether now or in the near future or even in death. Surely a Daniel will come to judgment one day and those who looted Nigeria will be brought to justice
