PEOPLE AND POLITICS BY MOHAMMED HARUNA

Re: Citizen Buhari Vs. UBA…

ndajika@yahoo.com

Sir,

Our attentions have been drawn to the published article by Mallam Mohammed Haruna on the back page of this newspaper’s edition of Wednesday February 11, 2009 titled ‘Citizen Buhari versus UBA’ and wish to state as follows:

We have gone through our records and the said Abdulrraheem Buhari referred to in the article, neither worked nor retired from United Bank for Africa Plc as contained in the write-up.

UBA recognizes the contributions of its retirees and pensioners and have continued to engage and liaise with them towards the improvement of their welfare.

From the forgoing it is clear that the article is not true, therefore painting UBA in very bad light, before its stakeholders and the public.

In line with professional ethics and true journalistic spirit, we ask that you publish a corrigendum to correct this misinformation and misrepresentation in the Thursday edition of your paper and also cause same to be published by Mallam Mohammed Haruna with the same prominence, in his column next week.

We have suffered serious reputational damages as a result of the publication. We can only be reasonably assuaged by the publication of the corrigendum as requested above.

Thank you.

Management, UBA.

My mix-up of UBA with Afribank in the case of Buhari was inexplicable; Buhari worked in and retired from Afribank not the UBA. I therefore apologize to UBA unreservedly.

However, it would seem, from the reactions I received some of which I have reproduced below, that the UBA, along with several other banks, are not without their own shares of disgruntled retirees. Hopefully the boards and management of all these banks will soon do what is fair and just by those who had helped them generate their huge revenues.

Sir,

Buhari served Afribank not UBA as erroneously reported. However, your articulate presentation reflects the feelings of those disengaged up to 2004 who equally fell victim of the Bank’s wicked and human treatment of loyal and promising staff that were prematurely retired in the name of re-structuring.

Since the Bank is stronger than all of us, only divine intervention will see us through.

M. Moh’d

Sir,

Citizen Buhari is not alone. UBA cheated over 4000 people. Those who served the bank for a period ranging between 18, 20, 25 years up to 1997 were paid N25000 retirement benefits after all deductions. But we blame nobody but BABANGIDA( General Ibrahim, former military president) WHO SOLD THE BANKS TO PEOPLE LIKE HAKEEM BELLO OSAGIE.

Sir,

HABA U.B.A, TELL THE WORLD WHAT YOU PAY YOUR PENSIONERS. I AM A VICTIM MY PAY IS 75O NAIRA MONTHLY.

THONY,  GOMBE STATE.

Sir,

The attention of the public should be drawn towards the plight of the retireees of UNITY BANK and BANK OF THE  NORTH. After four years of merger NO KOBO has been paid to those retired.

Abdulsalam

Sir,

Your article on Buhari vs. UBA was factual. The other aspect which has been going on with some banks is systematic and selective disengagement of staff of Northern extraction for the past few years. I challenge these banks to publish the staff disengaged from 2006 to date. It will be so interesting and revealing. Thanks

Lawal Sani.

… and the Unsung success story

Sir,

Hired crier! We've been trying to conduct searches in CAC for three weeks without success.

Sir,

How can you sing-praise a relocation without provision for parking space for customer vehicles? You need to visit the so-called new office at Maitama. Please tell ALMUSTAPHA that he is a poor administrator.

 Barrister Kayode.

Sir,

I am a regular reader of your column. I commend you for bringing the plight as well as success stories of those you KNOW to public attention. How does someone you DON’T KNOW also get a mention? Thanks and keep up the good work.

“Unknown Nigerian.”

Sir,

I have just finished reading your write up (Wednesday column). As per your reasoning and comments about my learned friend, the RG of CAC, I concur with your reasoning, comments and conclusion. Without doubt, Almustapha Esq. has made remarkable achievements at CAC.  However, I wish to humbly recommend to you another unsung personality in the person of Professor M. T. Bande, OFR, who a week ago handed over the affairs of Usmanu Danfodio University,Sokoto, to an acting Vice Chancellor, after five years of meritorious service to Nigeria and humanity, as V C.

Sir,

Please refer to THISDAY EDITORIAL OF JULY 30, 2008 ON CAC! ALSO TRY TO OBTAIN COPIES OF CITIZEN LTD MEMO/ CO2, CO7, AT CAC TODAY. I AM SURE YOU WILL THINK AGAIN

Sir,

Your accolades for Al-Mustapha would have covered the whole back page and more had you spoken to his staff. Our wish was for him to stay on for a 'third term'.

Re: Hackers at work

It has since come to my notice that the perpetrators of the 419 (advanced fee fraud) that hacked into my old email address and hijacked it have become even bolder. They are now going round telling people I represent a company in which I have absolutely no shares but with which I have had a professional relationship.

As I said in my column of January 14, I have since stopped using the old email address which they seem to have hijacked and anyone who does any business with the crooks based on any email from the address does so at his or her own risk.

I have since reported this matter to the Nigeria Police and the EFCC.
