Mohammed Haruna was
born on September 22, 1951 in
Ibadan, Oyo State. He had his primary school education in Kano from 1957
to 1964. He attended Government College, Bida from 1965 to 1969. He
proceeded to the School of Basic Studies, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria
in 1971/72. In 1973, Mohammed Haruna enrolled at Ahmadu Bello University,
Zaria where he obtained his B.Sc. (Government) in 1975. He had his post
graduate diploma in Public Administration from Glasgow Polytechnic
(1980), M.Sc. in Journalism from Columbia University, New York (1984) and diploma in Advanced
Management Program from Harvard Business School, Boston.
Regarding his career, Mohammed Haruna worked in the
editorial
department of the New Nigerian Newspaper upon graduation, rising to
its Acting Editor in 1981/1982 and becoming the Managing Director
in 1985. He retired in 1989. In 1990, he co-founded the Citizen,
a weekly
magazine, which collapsed in 1994. Mohammed Haruna became the Chief
Press Secretary to Head-of-State, General Abdulsalami
Abubakar, in June 1998 and left with him in May 1999. He had managed the
Citizen Communications Limited before and
after the CPS stint.
